Cosponsor Hawley’s Motion to Censure Chuck Schumer for Supreme Court Threats
Schumer threatened the
justices in unprecedented terms.

Fourteen Republican Senators have agreed
to cosponsor a measure that would formally censure Chuck Schumer for
threatening two Supreme Court Justices.
Schumer threatened justices Brett
Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch earlier this month while speaking at a pro-abortion
rally, stating that they would “pay the price” for potential pro-life rulings
that would approve new abortion restrictions passed by conservative state
legislators.
“I want to tell you, Gorsuch,
Kavanaugh…. You have unleashed the whirlwind, and you will pay the price! You
won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
The comments drew wide rebuke from across
the political spectrum, with Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts
even issuing a formal statement rebuking Schumer’s heated language towards the
judges.
Missouri Senator Josh Hawley announced that
he would prepare a motion to formally censure Schumer for his remarks the day
after.
The resolution has
now been formally submitted to the Senate. If passed, it would mean the chamber
officially “censures and condemns in the strongest possible terms the
Senator from New York, Mr. Schumer, for his threatening statements against
As-sociate Justice Neil M. Gorsuch and Associate Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh.”
The following Republican Senators are
cosponsoring the censure proposal: Mike Braun, Martha McSally, Thom Tillis, Tim
Scott, Rick Scott, Ben Sasse, David Perdue, Kelly Loeffler, Mike Lee, Joni
Ernst, Jim Inhofe, Steve Daines, Ted Cruz, and Kevin Cramer.
The passage of the censure motion depends on the political whims
of Mitch McConnell. Its prospects range from doubtful to slim, but in any case,
the motion represents a serious embarrassment for Schumer. The Democratic
Senate Minority Leader backed down after being blasted for his anti-judiciary
remarks, admitting that he spoke in rash and “angry” terms.
